Obituary for Irene Tamelin

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Tamelin (nee Legebokoff) on May 31,2023
Born in Nelson BC on September 14, 1938 to James and Lucille Legebokoff.
Originally from Taghum, the family relocated to Grand Forks, where they ran the Hillview Corner store and Irene attended school and graduating in the class of 57.
She continued her education at UBC, and became a teacher, teaching both primary grades and Home Economics at GFSS.

She met “the love of her life” Lawrence Tamelin of Pass Creek and they were married in Dec, 1961.
Together they settled in Castlegar and raised their 4 children, Lorene, Larry, Adena, and Robert.
Although Irene dedicated most of her time caring for her family, she also took on occasional jobs outside of the home. She sold World Book encyclopedia, taught sewing classes and substituted as a teacher for school district 69. She spent 9 years employed as an activity coordinator in the extended care facility at Castlegar hospital.
She loved her work there as it fed her passion for teaching and caring for the elderly.
Irene also worked at Fabricland, which served as an outlet for her love for sewing.
Irene was a devout Doukhabor and was dedicated to preserving the culture and the language she treasured.
She served as a volunteer teaching Sunday School, cooking and sewing for numerous local events and fundraisers.
Irene will be remembered for her outstanding generosity of time and talent to countless organizations including the USCC, the DCA, The Benevolent Society, DHRS, and the
KCHS cooperative.
She did it all with a smile and gladness in her heart.
She enjoyed a full life, camping, gardening, and traveling with her husband, Lorne. They had many dear friends so there was never a dull moment.
Her laughter, friendly and cheerful spirit will be greatly missed in this community.

Irene was predeceased by her parents, her siblings, Vera, Laura, Fred and Sam.

Many thanks to the caring, compassionate staff at Castleview Care Center for being there for her during the past 2 years of isolation. The family are sincerely appreciative of the ways you committed to making her stay with you as comfortable as a home could be.
Thank you to Dr Megan Taylor for treating Mom and guiding us through the process of understanding dementia.
Thank you to Bill Strilaeff at The Castlegar funeral home, as well as Leonard Markin and the Doukhabor community for sending Irene home to heaven with a beautiful traditional service.
